The Signs of Tainted Chinese Drywall
The first step in finding out if your home was built or renovated with Tainted Chinese Drywall is a visual and scent inspection. You can do this yourself at home!
Tainted Chinese Drywall emits Hydrogen-Sulfide gas. This gas can cause health problems, will corrode copper and chrome plating, and smells like ammonia or rotten eggs. If you house emits these odors, and these odors are strongest inside your home and dissipate more and more once you get outside, this is a good indicator that you might have Chinese drywall somewhere in your home. While not all homes with Chinese Drywall have reported odors, but all have reported corrosion.
Metal corrosion indicated by the blackening of copper wires, ground wires, electrical connectors, silver or copper jewelry, chrome-plated bathroom fixtures or mirror backing in bathrooms is the best indicator of a potential Chinese Drywall Problem in your home. (Remember!: Corrosion of electrical wiring can hamper the effectiveness of your smoke detection and can create a risk of fire.)
